"The end of labor is to gain leisure"-Aristotle

By: Matt Davison
This picture represents a very popular American leisure activity. Camping has been an American pastime for many years. It's a great way to bond with family and friends in a relatively stress-free environment away from technology and the frustrations of life. Camping is also the perfect way to snap out of our monotonous daily routines; allowing ourselves to mentally release from the burdens of our obligations and optimistically prepare for the future.
I believe leisure is an activity chosen in our unobligated free time for its qualities of satisfaction, and in my opinion, camping is one of the better ways to experience leisure.

What is Leisure?

By Jamie Notaro (notaro1)
This picture was taken at Oak Street Beach in downtown Chicago. The view of various buildings in Chicago, the sky, the water, and those enjoying their time at the beach represents relaxation and an escape from reality. I took this trip to the beach with my older sister and older cousin. We spent the afternoon talking about anything and everything and simply enjoyed one another's company. It felt good to relax and relieve some of the stress of everyday life.
My definition of leisure is the time you spend without thinking or worrying about the responsibilities you have or problems that may need to be faced while in the prescence of those you love. Being able to clear your mind and be at ease with family or friends is my idea of leisure at its finest.

Leisure is necessary condition for happiness!-Aristotle

By Sungwon Kim- kim203

This image depicts the game of golf. During summertime when the weather gets sunny and hot, I get to spend lots of time playing golf.

Playing golf means achieving freedom in a challenging way during unobligated time period. And I am doing it for it's own intrinsic values rather than something that pays off. Also playing golf makes me so involving because it provides abilities and challenges which gives me sense of accomplishment.
As a result, my definition of leisure is a concept that has to deal with the freedom, intrinsic values and challenges. To begin with the freedom, leisure has to take place during unobligated time as it has derieved from Latin word licere meaning "to be free." Intrinsic value is also necessary for leisure to meet its requirement. If I am playing golf tournament to win a prize, then it would be doing for an extrinsic value and it would no more be considered a leisure. Instead, I'm doing it for its own sake of it. Finally leisure should bring certain challenges. Without the challenges, golf would be boring and only be waste of time in the hot weather.
